Complex Autism - Speech, Sensory, Cognition and behaviour

This workshop will explore the challenges faced by children with complex autism.

What do you do if your child doesn't communicate? How do you go out in the community if your child covers their ears when it's noisy or won't sit still at a table? How do you cope with hand-flapping, biting or hiding under covers? What if your child self-injures or won't eat?

We will look at practical examples of therapies that may be useful such as Intensive Interaction, Attention Autism, PECS and Play Therapy and explore strategies for the home that will provide structure, routine and calm. We will consider what should be in a good EHCP and where parents can obtain further support.

Sensory Processing - Understanding, exploring and regulating the senses

Does your child dislike tags and seams on clothes? Do they avoid certain tastes and smells? Have you noticed your child is unable to sit still? Rocks? Hugs too tight? It may be that their sensory systems are not working effectively.

Learn more about the eight senses and how individuals can be sensitive to and/or seek out sensory stimuli. You will get the opportunity to learn about strategies and resources that can be used to support yourself or your child/young person to regulate their sensory systems so that they can function successfully in daily life. You will have the chance to explore sensory equipment and how it can be used to support individuals with self-regulation.

Positive Support for behaviours that challenge

Do you find your child’s behaviour difficult to manage at times? Would you like to understand more about why children lose their temper or display behaviours that challenge - including withdrawing or shutting down?

Throughout the workshop we will work together to analyse your child's behaviour, discuss strategies and ideas and create an action plan for you to take away. By the end of the workshop you will have a greater understanding of your child's needs along with strategies to manage and support their behaviour. You will also have identified key areas to discuss with school/parents or other professionals.
